Ms.Jaz

Ms. Jaz is our guest today! She has a beautiful voice and spends her time between performing live theater and her singing career. Hi! Welcome to the zine, First i would like to apologise for the delay in scheduling this interview... How are you?

I'm doing fine. Thanks for asking.

I do hope the CD "Chances" is well received?

I'm happy to say it is being received extremely well Domestically and internationally. I've received many calls and emails from my fans describing it as smooth, relaxing, sexy and silky. What I really love are the calls I get from people who tell me they loaned their CD to a friend or relative to listen to and can't get it back. What a wonderful compliment to me, not so good for them. J The regional stores in this area have placed the CD amongst their biggest selling Jazz artists which in turn has helped my sells, especially after people review/listen to the CD in the stores. The CD has also been selling well around the world at Cdbaby.com.

Tell us a little about the cd, what is the main theme?

The CD is about the chances we take in life be it love or family relationships. Whether it's falling in love for the first time or taking a chance on love the 2nd time, we can never predict the outcome. It's also about relationships within our family. "It Couldn't Have Been More Than Yesterday" is about the love between my mother and I and the pain I've felt since she passed away. Everyday people fall in love and and allow themselves to become vulnerable, therefore, taking chances with our hearts and lives. Sometimes falling in love can be the most beautiful thing we experience and sometimes it can be the most painful. It's all about taking "Chances."

Which is your favorite songs in your repertoire?

Some of my favorite, but definitely not conclusive would be "My Funny Valentine", which has been labeled my signature song. "Me Too", "Somewhere In My Lifetime", "Bye Bye", "Chance On A Lover" and "This Masquerade".

Your voice has a fantastic range! Which allows you to sing various styles such as R&B, Blues, Gospel, etc. What made you choose Jazz over other styles?

First, thank you for the compliment. I picked Jazz because of what it draws from me inside. Jazz is emotional. It can be smooth and sexy, sad and heartbreaking or simply fast and energetic. It can take you into so many different directions in a single night or song. When I sing jazz, I can relate to so many of the songs through personal experiences in my life. That is why I can sing them from so deep in my heart. The artists I listen to most are jazz artists. My favorites are Nancy Wilson, Phyllis Hyman, Anita Baker and Randy Crawford.

Which venue you performed at is your favorite and why?

I had the opportunity to perform in Cincinnati's Aronoff Center. It's the new Arts Center. The sound was simply awesome and the ambiance fit for a jazz singer. It was also there that I had the opportunity to share the stage with the great Phil Perry.

What is in your CD player these days?

If you were to check my CD Player, you would find a mixture of CDs ranging from Nancy Wilson, Phyllis Hyman, Randy Crawford, Anita Baker, and Phil Perry. If you look real close, you might even find a Ms. Jaz CD there!

Do you have a pet?

I had a dog, but he passed away. I really miss him. His name was Dusty. I love dogs and plan to get another soon. Infact, I would love to have 2 Golden Retriever puppies growing up together.

What kind of humour does Ms.Jaz prefer?

Actually, I love all kinds of humour. My personality is very outgoing and I love being around people making me laugh. My preference would be people with a warm heart, yet funny and personable.

How do you recharge your energy?

My friends and family would take humor in that question. I never seem to run out of energy. I'm constantly moving, contantly doing something. The real question would be "When do I ever rest?" J When I'm not singing, I'm working on my next performance by selecting songs, setting up rehearsal schedules and promoting "Chances".

What is the most difficult part of creating?

Finding enough free and quite time. My most creative moments are when I'm dealing with something emotional. There is a song on the CD entitled "It Couldn't Have Been More Than Yesterday." The words to that song came to me the day after my mother passed away this year. My mother was probably my biggest fan and was looking forward to me doing the project. Unfortunately, she died before any of the songs were completed. The song speaks of our relationship and the chances she took in life with her health and illness. I miss her terribly and dedicated the CD to her memory.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions...

Thank you. It was my pleasure.
